Number of tax returns

The review of the tax allocation system in the Personal Income Tax Return, in force since 1 January 2007, requires the establishment of a settlement procedure of the tax allocation to the Catholic Church and the regularization of the resulting balance between the State and the Church.

Order of the Ministry of Economy and Finance EHA/2760/2008 of 25 September regulates this procedure and the actions of the different administrative bodies charged with the provisional and definitive settlements covered by the eighteenth additional provision of Act 51/2007 of 26 December on the General State Budget for the year 2008. The procedure regulated by this Order shall also be applicable both to the regularizations foreseen in the eighteenth additional provision, section three, of Act 42/2006 of 28 December on the General State Budget for the year 2007 and to those foreseen in successive annual laws on the General State Budget.

Once the Secretariat of State for Finance sends to the Episcopal Conference the figures corresponding to the definitive settlement of the amount corresponding to the last available year, in this case the result of the tax returns submitted in the spring of 2019 corresponding to the 2018 tax returns, the Episcopal Conference reports the data.

In 2018, the income of the Church by the Personal Income Tax reaches its historical maximum with 285.11 million euros.

Number of tax returns

The amount collected in favour of the Catholic Church grows in all the autonomous regions without exception, and in nine of them, in addition, there is also an increase in the number of taxpayers who mark the X. Above all, in Madrid, Andalusia, Murcia and Canaries.
